I take blame because not only is it a maturity thing but it’s a moral thing. I know right from wrong and I know when I’ve made mistakes. Some people would like to make your mistakes the focal point of your life, but I can’t allow negative people like that in my life. It’s funny the things you realize when you stop trying to find reasons to hate someone, you find reasons why their opinions never mattered. At least that’s what I’m finding. I hurt because I thought that if I broke my back to be someone that I’m not I’d find happiness in making others happy. Though making others happy is a passion of mine I know better than to believe that will always keep me happy. I out others before myself. I’m a good person and it took this long to realize that one person doubting that doesn’t make it so.

And it’s done..

And it’s done..

me: wow i have so much work to do

me: wow i have so much work to do

The sky when it snows is absolutely perfect. It can be 1 o’clock in the morning and bright outside. The silence of everything when it snows is beautiful. You can barely hear a sound when the snow covers everything. Just watching the snow fall and stick to the ground is beautiful. Yeah I guess it sucks that it’s cold and you have to shovel it out, but coming in from the cold and putting on warm clothes, sitting in the heat, and drinking hot chocolate is so relaxing. I miss the snow so much.

The Girl is fabulous, fashionable, and fantastic! I’m talking about Jessica Dean Turner! Thats right ladies and gents, come take a look at what makes Jessica happy!

Favorite pastime:

Reading. It’s taken over much of my time since my mom got the “Hooked on Phonics” set when I was three and shortly thereafter took me to the library for Go Dog, Go and Hop on Pop. I’m currently working my way through Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, and usually when I’m not reading, I’m listening to podcasts and stories on NPR or PRI. I sincerely love the idea of whole worlds and people being created by a writer and his or her various muses, being conveyed on paper, or in sound, and finally realized in the mind of the reader. And good storytelling forces you to work your imagination, allows you to build empathy, to hear voices, see terrains, smell smells, and feel things based solely on the words on the page. A good book and a comfy chair has consumed many an afternoon. My favorite book: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison.

Passion outside of acting:

My love of reading lends itself to my love of writing. I would journal and write short stories- or not so short, they never really ended as I never had a full plot but they kept going. They’re still in old 5-Star notebooks hidden in my old bedroom- but I became most consumed with writing when I was in 7th grade and my language arts teacher showed us the documentary for Def Poetry Jam. I saw Saul Williams and I knew what true love was. Later that year, to avoid writing a research paper for History Fair, I decided to do a project on African American writers who spearheaded the Women’s Rights Movement. I found Nikki Giovanni, Toni Cade-Bambara, Angela Davis, and Ntozake Shange. I started writing more and more to try to be like these women who inspired me, and it stuck. I used to slam competitively, but now I blog, write poems, a few short stories, and I’m working on a play.

Favorite Charity

I would love to be in a position to donate to After School Matters and its affiliates. There are so many young men and women in under-resourced communities throughout Chicago who never uncover their talents because they haven’t been afforded the opportunity to do so, and far too many young people who are victims of violence that sadly dominates the streets of Chicago. As an auntie, teaching artist, proud product of the city’s west side, if I can do something to promote the next generation of leaders, I’m happy to do so.

Favorite Play/Actor/Actress

Two Trains Running by August Wilson

Phylicia Rashad

William H. Macy

Inspiration:

My parents, two of the hardworking people to ever walk this earth. They instilled in me the faith that things work out the way they are meant to in due time, that whatever choice I make is the right one and to not worry, but work and trust and work. All I do is in an effort to prove the faith they have in me isn’t wasted, and to honor my mother’s prayers and my father’s ever-present memory.

My dream

On a superficial level, a top-story apartment with high ceilings, big windows, hardwood floors, and lots of books and knick-knacks. More than this, I want to run a studio for young artists in the city of Chicago, where they can write, design, act, edit, produce their work. I also want to keep learning more and more about all the facets of theatre. I want to act, write, direct, create, inspire. I want to make my nieces and nephews proud, and provide for them all that I can. And my mother. And my city. My dream is to be atypical, to do more than I think I am capable of, to be onstage for as long as they will have me, to be on film, to create work and teach, to be a constant student, to be published, to travel, and to continue making art with the people I love. Not enough empires are being constructed nowadays. DTC might be just the kids to do it.
